I make full-scale human figures from typewriter parts. I don’t solder, weld, or glue these assemblages; I reassemble the parts using only the components and mechanical processes indigenous to the typewriter. I’ve come to think of the nearly archaic typewriter as one part of our natural surroundings. All unused and unusable typewriters are the accretions of our procreation, our activity, and our growth- not unlike a termite mound, a bird’s nest, or a beehive. By turning these machines inside-out and taking all the components out of their original context, I hope to show how the designers of typewriters drew from the human body and nature.
I was born and raised in Northern Minnesota and moved to Tahoe City, California in 1990. I now live and work in the San Francisco Bay area. jeremymayer.com
